Identifying ferrous scrap metal
When we purchase ferrous scrap metal
How is metal recycled in the UK?

The basic rule for identifying ferrous scrap metal is as follows. Place a magnet onto the surface of the metal in question, if a magnet sticks to the metal, then it is probably made from a ferrous metal. There are exceptions to this rule, but generally speaking, this is a great way to quickly determine the type metal you have.

There are many different types of ferrous scrap metals, here are some typical examples...

  • Scrap industrial machinery, lathes, pillar drills, grinders, metal press, printing press etc.
  • Scrap RSJ's, iron fencing, manhole covers, re-bar, iron posts, racking and shelving etc.
  • Scrap washing machines, tumble dryers, microwaves, cookers, iron boilers etc.
  • Scrap lawnmowers, metal garden furniture, metal benches, bicycles, metal tools etc.
  • Scrap computer towers, power tools, metal cabinets, metal tool boxes etc.

Under UK law we are required to see proof of identification before any transaction, so, if you are a new customer, please remember to bring your proof of identification, such as a photo-card driving licence or a valid photo passport, we only require this for the first visit to our facility, we do not require identification for return customers.

Imperial Metal Recyclers do not purchase any stolen scrap metal of any description. We reserve the right to refuse any scrap metal that we believe to be stolen. Imperial Metal Recyclers are proud to be working with Smartwater metal theft protection, and we reserve the right to refuse any metals marked with smartwater theft protection paint. The process for recycling ferrous scrap metal..

When metal is recycled at our scrap metal recycling facility, we remove any hazardous materials and/or liquids from the objects. After this, we categorize the different metal types such as, aluminium, iron, stainless steel etc, we then process the metals again into small pieces using a variety of different machinery such as crushing and bailing machines which crush the scrap into convenient cubes for transportation. We use large lorries, sometimes called bulkers to transport the metal the the next recycling stage. A large scrap handling machine - sometimes called a grab machine, loads the lorry to its maximum capacity. When loading is complete, the bulker lorry will deliver the scrap metal to a large industrial facility for further refinement.

These industrial facilities have very large processing machines which will divide the metal into various types and further remove any hazardous materials if they are present. They can process anything from small, high volume scrap metals to very large scrap metal objects, this could be anything from a lorry chassis to the superstructure of a ship, this extremely powerful machine, sometimes called a fragmenter, crushes and cuts the object into even smaller pieces to allow for easy global transportation.

When the fragmentation and sorting process is complete, the scrap metal is transported over land, sea and air to various smelting facilities around the world which further refine the scrap metal into new metal ingots, plates, rolls etc, and a wide variety of shapes and sizes, according to the customers requirements. The newly recycled metal is then used in new products and the recycling process is repeated once the object reaches the end of its life.
